FYT's objectives are to provide family entertainment in the Furness area and to develop young people's confidence and skills in acting, singing, movement, communication and self-expression.

Taking part in theatre productions gives young people the invaluable experience of working together as a mutually supportive and self-disciplined team. This is an experience which drama classes and workshops alone cannot provide, and is the reason why FYT enables all its members to progress to large scale theatre, should they wish to do so.

Membership is open to anyone aged 7 - 18 who has an interest in the performing arts. No prior experience is necessary - most of the people who come to us are absolute beginners. All that’s needed is commitment and a positive attitude.  We also cater increasingly for children who have attended non-performing drama-classes and who now wish to display their talents in major productions.

Comments from a former member:

" I don't know where youth theatre fits into the global scale of things, but it certainly means a lot to a lot of different people. A friend of mine recently joined the armed forces. She was surprised to find the interview panel were more interested in her amateur theatrical background than in her academic record, until they explained to her that the scariest thing to being shot at was to go on stage.

I still value my time at youth theatre.  For me it was an opportunity to learn in a safe environment.   In an area where the potential pitfalls for young people far outweigh the opportunities on offer, groups that develop the social/communications skills and confidence of their members are as invaluable as academic institutions."
